Diabetes

If not controlled, type 2 diabetes can lead to blindness, heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, amputations (having a toe or foot removed, for example), and nerve damage. In women, diabetes can cause problems during pregnancy.

While it is a serious disease, type 2 diabetes can be prevented. If you're overweight, start making small changes to your eating habits by adding more whole grain foods, fruits, and vegetables. Eat healthier by choosing low fat and low cholesterol foods, as well as whole grains, and limiting alcohol. Also, get moving! Each week, aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Also aim to do muscle strengthening activities 2 days a week.
