Description: United Neighbors is a 501C-3 community-based agency that provides services in housing, youth programs, neighborhood watch and improvement, and health education. It is also a HUD-certified local housing counseling agency. Our service area is primarily Scott County Iowa. We do accept clients from the Quad-Cities metro region, the state of Iowa, and specified adjacent Illinois counties. Our Multicultural Health Committee program is part of our community outreach. The Multi-Cultural Health Initiative is a volunteer committee that coordinates special events to increase awareness of heart health, breast cancer, prostate cancer, obesity, and other health issues. It aims to reach the underserved minority populations. Fourteen percent of our families living in the area are at or below the poverty level and have been traditionally under-served. United Neighbors, Inc. has actively participated in the National Women’s Health Initiative for the past nine years. Information, referrals, unique programming and partnerships with other local organizations has brought woman of many different backgrounds together to address women’s health issues. These partners are; Scott County Health Dept., Genesis Health Systems, Iowa State University Extension, Hamilton Technical College, Palmer College of Chiropractic, QC-Times, KALA-St. Ambrose Radio, and Trinity Health Systems. At our event, there will be 25 community health related booths. We will have a guest speaker who will speak to the importance of heart health. There will be exercise and dance activity demonstrations, and a healthy meal will be included in the ticket price. Our goal in hosting this event is to bring together women, with a focus on the underserved and ethnic minority women, within the quad-cities and surrounding areas to promote proactive health care and wellness. We’re committed to educating, supporting, and advocating for women’s health. Our focus this year is on “Heart Health”. The statistics are sobering. African-American women are 35 percent more likely to die of heart disease than Caucasian women, and Hispanic women face heart disease nearly 10 years earlier than Caucasian women. Pacific Islander women, long considered at low risk, count heart disease as their second leading cause of death. Obesity, high cholesterol, poverty, language barriers, physical inactivity, and lack of information all contribute to increased risk factors for women of color. A recent study found that minority patients may have poorer health because of disparities in health care, and another found that minority women were more likely to mistrust their health care provider. These are factors that make it difficult for women to gain control over their heart disease risk. The money raised from this event will be used to pay for heart health materials, folders, postage, gift bags, the event location, and the speaker. We will be soliciting for other funding to prepare for this event. United Neighbors will provide a pre-event questionnaire for participants to determine their level of understanding regarding heart health prevention, treatment, and the checkups they should schedule. United Neighbors will provide post-event questionnaires to assess the increased knowledge regarding prevention and testing after participating in this event. Local women struggling with heart disease will share their personal journeys and the need for proactive health measures for all women. The importance of preventive health care will be the drive to keep this program alive.

This is a public event and is open to the general public.
