Amblyopia, an eye disorder in children where the brain favors one eye over another, has up to now only been treatable by covering the favored eye with a patch to force the brain to adjust the weaker eye. Lack of early detection and social stigmas of wearing eye patches reduced effective treatment, but new research and screening practices are improving treatment rates.
