What is the National Breastfeeding Campaign?
The National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign was a media campaign that launched in June of 2004. The television public service announcements (PSAs) expired in 2005 and the radio PSAs expired in April of 2006.
The National Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign tried to change behaviors and attitudes about breastfeeding. It aimed to show that breastfeeding is a normal and preferable way to feed babies because of the many health benefits. The campaign was also a way to educate parents so they understand the decision will affect both the mother's and the baby's health. It spoke to parents who might not normally choose to breastfeed their babies, and engaged doctors, nurses, hospitals, employers, insurance providers and others, to support parents' choices to breastfeed, even through significant obstacles. The campaign messages were not statements about women who did not or could not nurse.
